A House Built “Upside Down” To Maximize The Ocean Views | Contemporist (2015)
The Upside Down House in Montauk reimagines the traditional beach home by flipping its program to prioritize panoramic ocean views. Berg Design placed the primary living areas, including the open-plan living room, primary suite, and expansive second-floor deck, on the upper floor, while the ground level houses secondary rooms, a pool area, and outdoor entertaining spaces. A dramatic floating staircase in an oversized open stairwell connects the two levels, channeling light deep into the home.
Floor-to-ceiling glass opens the upstairs living spaces to the ocean, framing the horizon and welcoming sea breezes. Overhangs and orientation are carefully tuned to mitigate glare and provide comfort. Inside, refined materials; metallic charcoal grey cabinetry, leather-flamed marble countertops, and textural woods, bring warmth and character to the modern design. The result is a bold, site-responsive retreat that fully embraces Montauk’s coastal landscape.
